HUNTING QUARTERS MEETING HOUSE
1026 Seashore Drive
Atlantic, NC 28511
We now have a place to gather and share stories
and photos, study local history and do genealogy. This is the result
of hard work, donations and the desire to preserve and pass on the
rich history of our area.
Several residents of Atlantic felt there was a
great need to bring together all residents of Hunting Quarters who
have an interest in our past. We feel that in today's modern life
style, with home computers and television we tend to leave little
time for families to sit around and hand down family histories etc.
and a small research library ready, with books, papers, maps, microfilm
and microfilm reader, for those anxious to complete their genealogy.
This will not be a Genealogical or Historical Society
with membership.
It is open to the public as a community gathering
place. It will be open every Thursday night at 7:00 - until..
You can come in and enjoy the story telling, tell
some tales of your own, join in debates on local history, share
and identify old photos, or just find a quiet corner and research
your family tree.
The building is opposite the Atlantic Fire Department.
It will be located in the section that was formerly the beauty shop.
If you live in the Hunting Quarters area you will
find lots of information that will interest you. If you have old
photos, documents or artifacts please bring them to the meeting
and share with us.
This is not an organization with annual dues or
bylaws. It is meant to be an informal gathering of any persons interested
in the history of Hunting Quarters. It is not a moneymaking event,
but is run and operated with volunteers and donations. We are having
lots of fun, come and join us! Ellen

Check out our interview
with Atlantic resident and history buff, Danny Taylor, featuring
information on local contributions to the battle of the Ironclads,
an alternate theory on the location of the Lost
Colony and our search for information on the history
of Atlantic Field. If you
have more information on the history of Atlantic or the greater
Down East area, we'd love to talk
to you!
Atlantic, at the end of U. S. Highway 70,
was originally settled in the 1740s as Hunting Quarters. When the
first post office was established in 1880, the name was changed
to Atlantic.
Atlantic is home to two of the East Coast's
largest seafood dealers, Luther Smith & Son Seafood Company
and Clayton Fulcher Seafood Company listed
here along with other local businesses, as well as the Marine
Corps Outlying
Field and part of the Mid-Atlantic
Electronic Warfare Range.
The 4th and 5th grade classes at Atlantic
Elementary School are doing a research and Internet project about
Down East, and have pages about the history
and churches
of Atlantic, as well as the school gym,
ball
field and Port
(formerly Camp) Happy. The students are busy researching many
things, so look for other links to their work on our community pages.
Check the Events page for a listing of

to let us know
of upcoming events for the Calendar and
to check the Forum page frequently!
